According to Restructure Studio, the house is on course to achieve a five-star rating from Austin Energy Green Building. The smallest home on the tour at 850 square feet, this three-bedroom house in Bouldin has a garage that’s more than half the size of the main house. Designed for an architect-realtor and his family, the minimalist home features a wall paneled with siding that was salvaged from a chicken coop formerly on the site. The renovation of this Clarksville home preserves the historic character of the original house, which was built by Nick Dawson, known for many of the Queen Anne–style limestone cottages in the Castle Hill Historic District. Some changes, such as the new living room, look as though they were always there.
More information on the tour, including where to buy tickets, is available at the AIA Austin Homes Tour website. This 1,567-square-foot, two-bedroom Crestview home has been given the nickname Re-Open House because of its new, flowing floor plan. That was accomplished by the raising of the original roof and the unifying of the common areas, such as the kitchen.
